ROYAL CULTURE
Home to the Nguyen Emperors who ruled Vietnam from
1802 to 1945, the
central city of Hue became a key cultural centre,
attracting the country’s best
craftspeople, entertainers and artists, as well as
leading scholars and monks.
In response to the nobles’ thirst for luxury
and learning, everything from architecture
to dance to cuisine was modified and
refined, creating a distinctive court culture
that remains evident to this day.
Artisans and trades-people established specialized
villages around Hue that produced
wares ranging from bronze temple objects
to incense sticks. While some of these
traditional trades have been abandoned,
many of the villages remain, as do the
dozens of pagodas once patronized by Hue’s royals
and mandarins. Drive from
the Royal Citadel to Hue’s most sacred site, the
early 17th century Thien Mu
(Celestial Lady) Pagoda, and you’ll pass through
green countryside that once
served as imperial gardens, and villages founded by
the Nguyen monarchs.
This road will also bring you to Ancient Hue, a
2,000-square-meter site devoted
to Hue’s ancient arts, cuisine and culture.

TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE
In line with traditional design, the complex’s
central courtyard features ceremonial
bronze urns, a well and a lotus pond, around which
are positioned five
authentic Hue houses that date from the 1800s and
early 1900s. Named after
five nearby villages, these royal houses allow
visitors to glimpse Hue’s splendid past and
to experience the court’s enduring cultural
legacy. In the beautiful wooden house of Kim
Long (Golden Dragon), visitors will find a
museum featuring local antiques and artifacts,
while the neighboring clay-roofed house of
Van Thanh (Land of Knowledge) has been
turned into an art gallery that hosts exhibitions
by Vietnam’s best-known artists.
The central pavilion of Van Xuan (Land of
Spring) houses a luxurious upstairs restaurant and a
relaxing open-air bar in
an impressive wooden building that resembles the
Peace Palace in Hue’s Royal
Citadel. Next door lie the beautifully outfitted
Ngoc Ho (The Pearl), a smaller,
air-conditioned restaurant for VIP groups, and Gia
Vien (Precious Creatures),
an intricately carved wooden structure that takes
its name from the nearby
village once charged with safeguarding the emperor’s
collection of rare and
exotic animals. Classic, Indochina-style
furnishings, art and antiques add to the
pavilions’ gracious atmosphere.

ROYAL CUISINE
The Nguyen emperors’ banquets were
legendary, with some feasts said to have
included 300 rare dishes served in more than a
thousand bowls. To satisfy the nobles’ craving
for variety, Hue’s royal cooks specialized in
small, bite-sized morsels, developing delectable
appetizers and snack foods unique to this
region. Delicate sweet and spicy flavors and
an abundance of fresh produce and seafood
characterize Hue cuisine.
At Ancient Hue, visitors can sample local
delights like banh beo, tiny rice flour parcels
topped with shrimp flakes and pork crackling,
and banh khoai, fried rice-flour pancakes stuffed
with shrimp, pork
and bean sprouts, and innovative fusion cuisine.
Trained at a fivestar
hotel, Ancient Hue’s chef mixes local specialties
with Asian and
European flavors to create memorable modern-day
royal feasts.
Rounding out the fine dining experience are creative
cocktails that
blend premium liquors with local fruits and an
impressive international
wine list. Groups may also wish to arrange cooking
classes with our
expert chefs, focusing on select local dishes and
royal cuisine.
