La Residence History
In 1930, the mansion at 5 Le Loi opened as an addition to the residence of the colonial French Resident Superieure. This period was the hey-dey of the Art Deco school of design. No corner of the globe was beyond the bounds of this popular movement.
While Art Deco fever was especially fervent in Hanoi and Saigon, Hue also tapped the design current of the day for some of its landmark period buildings. The colonial authorities built the Cercle Sportif, a leisure club that still stands on the south bank of the of Perfume River. And they commissioned a grand colonial mansion, anchored by a rotunda and flanked by swept wings. The building’s bowed façade, its long horizontal lines and such nautical flourishes as porthole windows are hallmarks of the Streamline Moderne school of Art Deco architecture.
In the 1930s, Le Loi Street was known as rue Jules Ferry, thus named for a 19th Century French prime minister and imperialist. During the Nguyen Dynasty, the imperial navy governed the land along the river, from the present-day railway station to the Stone Bridge (Dap Da) 2.5 kilometers downstream. When the French assumed control of Hue in the 1880s, they ceded the northern bank of the Perfume River to the Vietnamese and redeveloped the south bank as their ‘New City.’
It’s a rare hotel that can transport guests back to a bygone era but La Residence Hotel & Spa pulls it off in spectacular style. Built in 1930 as part of the former colonial governor’s residence overlooking Hue’s Perfume River, this architectural gem was restored and re-opened in 2005 as a deluxe hotel, and is now a jewel in the crown of Accor Hotels’ stylish MGallery portfolio. The Art Deco design aesthetic runs throughout the hotel from the central reception rotunda, flanked by two wings, to Le Gouverneur Bar, Le Parfum restaurant, formal gardens, swimming pool, and 122 guest rooms and suites.
Each guest and public room is a faithful interpretation of style during the heydey of Art Deco. Paris-based interior designer Brigitte Dumont de Chassart scoured design archives for inspirational touches throughout the hotel, from its high ceilings, terrazzo floors, hand rails, balconies, light fittings and furnishings.

Le Parfum Restaurant
Gourmet dining is serious business at La Residence and the main restaurant, Le Parfum, delivers a first class French-Vietnamese fusion experience. In a country that doesn’t normally serve meals by courses, one look at the chef’s selection of Hue Appertiser, five elements of Le Parfum entree , or sweet eggnest dessert lovingly presented under a bamboo bird cage is enough to reveal an approach that’s on an entirely different level from the current regard for Vietnamese cuisine. For those who want to delve further into Vietnam’s varied culinary traditions, there’s an entire Vietnamese discovery selection showcasing elaborate regional delicacies.
Even in the Continental corner of the menu, where our Chef showcases his global repertoire, local references abound: pan fried French Pigeon with sautéed chanterelle mushroom, grilled half smoked Australian Wagyu Striploin, the pumpkin soup is laced with Phan Thiet vanilla. In a six-course degustation menu, our chef takes on French cooking with Vietnamese ingredients and accompanying wines.
Le Parfum also offers al fresco dining at the Terrace overlooking the hotel’s herb garden and the Perfume River.
Opening hours: Breakfast: 06:00 – 10:30; Lunch & Dinner: 11:30 – 23:00

Le Gouverneur Bar
When visiting the former Imperial City of Hue, Vietnam, one expects crumbling citadels, peaceful pagodas and picturesque streets; one does not expect to find a well-preserved sanctum to the glorious Art-Deco years, stocked with first-rate spirits and Cuban cigars. Oozing with 1920s elegance, Bar Le Gouverneur at La Residence Hue Hotel and Spa, MGallery by Sofitel greets visitors with refreshing airiness and comfy, red-cushioned armchairs crafted from dark wood in the Vietnamese style. Natural light pours into the crescent-shaped space from floor-to-ceiling windows, opening up enticing views of the resort’s tropical gardens and the Perfume River.
An extraordinary mural by French artist Roland Renaud arcs across the room. When evening arrives, tall lamps and subtle lighting cast Le Gouverneur’s curved polished-wood bar and lofty ceilings in an inviting glow. French-colonial style doors open onto a raised terrace with tables overlooking the illuminated gardens. The sounds of a last boat motoring down the river and the calls of wild birds filter through to guests sipping sundowners in the evening air.
